Delving into a Great Novels!

Help me give my students the opportunity to begin to visualize amazing stories/pictures in their mind instead of reading graphic novels which has mostly pictures.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students came out of the pandemic voracious readers of....graphic novels! The horror of it all! Those are fun, but do they really allow for readers to feel the story? To see the words come alive in their mind and not in a picture the illustrator designed?

The books I've chosen will do just that for my students.

I want them to feel empathy, understanding, joy and sadness from these two novels. I want them to read along with me (or have a chance to become the reader aloud in class).

"Because of Winn Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo features a young girl who finds a scrawny dog and just has to keep him. Winn-Dixie (named such because she grabbed him while he was running through the supermarket of the same name) changes the lives of everyone who meets him. The other novel , "The Graduation of Jake Moon" by Barbara Park strikes a chord when Jake realizes that his grandfather, Skelly has Alzheimers and learns to deal with the changes in their lives.
