Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Trying to inspire achievement in one of the most under-served communities in the county. As the teacher of American History in a high-need, at-risk, low income section of a major metropolitan area in NY, I must meet certain challenges in order to engage the students. This is considerably more important at my school as graduation rates don't even reach 50%. There are just over 4000 students sitting in the four grades at the school. Of that number, a majority (2387) are male. A great fall off in students sitting in each grade can be found. While there are 1764 students in the ninth grade, there are only 506 in their senior year. Of those graduating in 2006, only 49% of the students in the 2002 cohort were present. In order to move on to college students must take a state standardized exam - in June 2008 55% passed the US History exam. Constant failing often leads to students dropping out. Your support will help our students to engage in the course work more effectively. Just reading about our country does not make history alive. These students face very unique challenges and need to know that they are an integral part of the American experience. History is not a dry subject and dull words, but is an important shaper of culture. With the accessories that you will be helping us to receive along with the printer and computer we currently have - without a monitor, I will be able to make my classes a multimedia experience. As a teacher I will be able to provide a work station where all students can do work for both my class and other classes at the school, something most can't do at home. Students will learn how to use a computer more efficiently and effectively...a skill that will also help them in college. Learning though should not be completely teacher driven, and such will be the case with these computer accessories for a work station. Students will be able to enhance their learning by writing papers, creating and editing videos, presentations and "podcasts" for use of other classes this year and in years to come. We are the change we are looking for. The children of my district need your support. You and your support will help my students to pass their classes, their exams, and lastly move on and succeed at the collegiate level. My students need supplies to complete a classroom computer work station. An LCD monitor, speakers, a keyboard and mouse combo, a fax machine, and a chair.
