As the teacher of American History in a high-need, at-risk, low income section of a major metropolitan area in NY, I must meet certain challenges in order to engage the students. This is considerably more important at my school as graduation rates don't even reach 50%. There are just over 4000 students sitting in the four grades at the school. Of that number, a majority (2387) are male. A great fall off in students sitting in each grade can be found. While there are 1764 students in the ninth grade, there are only 506 in their senior year. Of those graduating in 2006, only 49% of the students in the 2002 cohort were present. In order to move on to college students must take a state standardized exam - in January 2008 60% passed the US History exam. Constant failing often leads to students dropping out.
