Our students are from an urban high school with the unique benefit of being incredibly diverse. They come from neighborhoods all around the city that are very different from one another. My AP U.S. Government and Politics classes consist of multiple levels of students, so they range from kids who are struggling to those who will attend prestigious universities. The kids are amazing and most work to the best of their abilities, but it is truly important to me to reach EVERY student!
Because many of our students come from backgrounds where they have a variety of challenges, we would love to provide materials that have all of the essentials necessary to access AP Government in a rigorous way that keeps them on pace with suburban schools.
The course was redesigned this year and our students are at an incredible disadvantage due to the outdated textbook we currently have. The school district does not have the funding to buy all new books. There is a textbook available that has been completely updated and is affordable. It would truly help my students to have this book available for the second semester and the review for the AP.
My Project
The textbooks I am requesting are essential to help my kids master the material necessary for the new AP U.S. Government and Politics exam. The course was recently updated with new question types and required documents that are not covered in the textbook we currently use. The district is not planning to replace the book we have, as it has most of the information needed for the exam. We are charged with supplementing the course with additional materials and changing the types of questions we use on tests.
The new book does a great job of making the required documents-the Federalist Papers, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Letter From Birmingham Jail- accessible by giving excerpts and explaining how they relate to the course.
At the end of each chapter, there are new style questions for kids to use as practice, as well as the new essay type questions. It is important that students practice the type of questions that will be on the actual AP exam in order to be successful in earning college credit.
Students who bought the book last year loved it and felt it was straightforward with regard to the material. They appreciated that it didn't give a lot of extra and unnecessary information, while explaining the concepts thoroughly. They were able to do the end of the chapter quizzes for review. Many of the kids who bought the book and used it did very well on the AP exam. I would love to bring this opportunity to all of my students this year!
