Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright and creative young city kids. They have had art in their school for four years now, and they have displayed so much talent and promise in their newly acquired skills. No matter what life hands them, my students still put their best effort forth. All students, no matter what their background or where they live, deserve an equitable chance at education and access to the best art education!

It breaks my heart that some of my students enter the classroom at a disadvantage as compared to their peers in more affluent districts.

The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic status households and qualify for free lunch at school.

These kids are bright, creative, and excited to learn more in the arts. No matter what struggles they face at home, they still wake up and come to school every day! They are stronger than they know and deserve so much more than they are handed. Empowering students through art and creating dynamic creative problem solvers is so important in our community.

My Project

As my room is currently, it gets very moist and humid during warmer months. This puts the brakes on some of our creativity as it takes twice or even tripple as long for our paint to dry than it would in a less humid environment. I have even opened up bottles of paint and found mold on the top and the bottles were not that old!

Painting is one of the bread and butter mediums and activities in the art room, and with the humidity against us, my students lack the butter (paint) to their bread (paper).

It really puts a hindrance on what we have access to. Even some dry material like oil pastels are affected by the humidity. Glue too!! White glue won't dry and glue sticks smears stay moist and never dry. It's quite frustrating for me, but more so for my young artists who are trying to create!
