Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The impact of climate change is felt stronger today than it ever has been. Unfortunate my students only know of it from passing comments in the news. To truly understand its causes and impact they need hard core research on the effects of fossil fuels and alternative energy sources.
I teach math, science, and history for new and beginning English language learning students in a high needs community.
Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, and Tagalog. 80% of the students receive free or reduced cost lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended private schools in their home countries while others have been out of school for a few years before entering the U.S. public school system.
My students necessarily need hands-on materials, visualizations, and extraordinary experiences to fuel their curiosity. Computer competency is necessary for my students to be able to be prepared for college.
My Project
The books I am requesting tell the story of green sources of energy. They do this through powerful writing, diagrams, photo illustrations, and thought provoking paragraphs. The books are at a variety of reading levels because my students read on a variety of reading levels. This means that all my students will have a book that they can access.
My students notice that the weather patterns change, and living in a big city, they notice the pollution around them. They need these resources to investigate and answer their own questions regarding environmental science. Inquiry is the best teacher.
The computer we have also requested will be used by students to perform online research and to write powerful essays based on what they've learned.
Some of my students with special needs need an isolated environment. These headphones block out noise distraction when students are reading.
It will take everyone to help change the environmental damage done through global warming, but this can not be done if our youngest members of society do not understand this challenges demands.
Please help put information and technology into the hands of my students
