My students need novels such as "Piecing Me Together," "Out of My Mind," & "All American Boys" highlight diverse experiences & provide opportunities to cultivate empathy
My 7th grade students are creative, energetic & inquisitive. They are eager to learn and seek opportunities to express themselves! Many of my students experience a safe and stable home and have been exposed to reading and stories that reflect their experiences. However, with a population that is increasingly diverse, in ability and culture, it is essential that all of my students have the opportunity to see themselves represented in the literature they are exposed to. Because my students are primarily white and affluent, I work with my students as continue to develop awareness of the world around them and their place in it.
My Project
Middle school can be one of the hardest times of life. The struggle to know who you are and your place in the world can be terrifying and lonely. Additionally, today's society can be confusing and scary to navigate.
I've found that one of the best ways I can support my students is to surround them with stories such as, "Ghost," "The Sun is Also a Star," & "American Born Chinese," that validate, challenge, & help them understand how others view the world.
With titles such as these, I hope to surround students with stories that will help them understand current issues through the eyes of another such as racism, immigration & bullying. I hope to encourage empathy, kindness & understanding of others.
