My Students

I have a group of fantastic 4th graders who range in age from 8 - 10. They are a wonderful group of boys and girls from varied economic and ethnic backgrounds.

My students are eager to learn, and fourth grade is such an exciting time to guide them, as they become more aware of the world around them.

In 4th grade we spend a lot of time learning how to research and share our findings. We learn about many things, such as the history of of our home state, California, and other topics in science and history. I enjoy seeing my students realize more about the world around them, and express their excitement to the class!

My Project

Every year my students read The Island of the Blue Dolphin. They love that book so much that this year I'd like to tie it in to our development of their research and writing skills! With some books about the animals in the Pacific Ocean, my students can dive deeper into their understanding of the world around them, and I can guide them as they do.

Integrating our Literature and Scientific Research will enable my students to understand more deeply how everything is connected, and inspire them to learn more about the world.

These books about otters, urchins, whales, and dolphins will let my students pick a subject of interest and investigate more in-class. They'll learn the habitat, life cycle, eating habits and range maps for these animals, and, by doing so as we read Island of the Blue Dolphins this year, they'll understand and enjoy that book even more! They'll then use these books to help them write research papers on their animal of choice, which they will then present to the class, so that all my students can share in the knowledge!
