As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with many challenges. I will be teaching 5th grade shared and guided reading. I work at a Title 1 school, and it is apparent that the students coming into my classroom often have challenges with reading. They come in feeling reading is boring and uninteresting. They do not see reading as an important and enjoyable part of their lives.
Develop a passion for learning, if you do you will never cease to grow.
These students have the warmest hearts and deserve an environment where they can learn to love reading. I have been doing a lot of research about Socratic seminars and novel studies. Students get the benefit of learning reading concepts while engaging with one another and reading several novels throughout the school year.
My focus this year is to show students how fun reading and discussion of novels can be. From Socratic seminars I hope to show students that reading is wonderful!
My Project
My students have fallen in love with Socratic Seminars. We delve deep into the discussion before, during, and after reading each of the chapters.
Deep discussion improve my relationships with my students and help me to serve them on a whole new level.
When I was in elementary school I fell in love with books from an amazing reading teacher. Now, I am enjoying some of the exact same novels with my own students.
Students used to beg to not come to group, now they hope they are chosen for my guided reading group. For many kids this novel study group is the first novel they have ever finished. They are so excited to see what's next on list of books to discuss and read.
