I am a teacher in a fully-self contained Special Education classroom in a high-need community that has the amazing opportunity to work with some of the most motivated and truly inspiring students that I have ever met. I work with 9th-11th graders and my students work extremely hard everyday and continuously strive for excellence in whatever they do.
This year, with the help of my co-workers, we have been able to implement a great new education opportunity for my students. For the first time ever at our school in the FSC setting, we are able to offer our students with disabilities a chance to not only rotate between three amazing Special Education teachers (like in the General Education setting) but within this program we are able to offer them a chance to learn subjects such as Science which was not available to them in the years before.
Science has been a great interest to my students and I am working hard to give them the tools and experiences they crave to capture their attention and expand their minds in the world of Science.
We have already learned about food chains and the different types of animals in ecosystems. To add to this knowledge, we are moving towards learning about Global Warming and the impact that we have on our planet. Therefore, I would like to have our own composter in the classroom where they can observe live worms breaking down our waste and providing necessary enriched soil for our plants that we are growing as well. This will allow for my students to observe "decomposer" animals first hand in our classroom as well as learn about how they might be able to implement a composter at home and save some trash from being sent to our already overfilled dumps.
By funding this project, you will not only provide my students with a hands on learning experience but be able to help them become responsible and environmentally conscious adults. This will make a large difference in not only their education but also their personal lives and in the long run, the future of our planet.
