Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very creative and love to express their creativity through their artwork. They are very diligent in creating artwork and take such care in making it. My students have diverse backgrounds which makes for very imaginative and original art projects.
The students at Long strive for excellence every day and deserve to be rewarded.
Higher-level resource guides, examples, and supplies are essential to continue fueling my students' creativity and skills.
Our school is socially and culturally diverse, which makes for a great global learning experience. We are an accredited International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme World School, we provide Dual Language classes to those whose primary language is not English, and are the district appointed School for the Deaf. Even with that much going for us, we need your help so we can soar to even greater heights.
My Project
One of the first decisions a yearbook staff makes before the hard work begins on a yearbook is the theme. This year, we were presented with many possibilities, most of which surrounded the pandemic. In wanting to be unique, the J.L. Long Yearbook Staff unanimously decided the theme should be "Decades." A nostalgic look into the past is not only comforting in a time such as this, but it is also a pool of endless possibilities. When we learned of our school archives - filled with photos of smiling students and documents chronicling various milestones - the Yearbook Staff lit up with excitement. The room buzzed with brilliant ideas. Every single student was engaged. Every student was passionate and motivated to begin this journey together.
At Long, we endeavor to instill a passion for community service in our students.
The 2020-2021 J.L. Long Yearbook Staff will be giving back to their school by helping preserve the photos and documents left behind by their predecessors. Many of the photos and documents will be scanned, using the flatbed scanner, and included in this year's yearbook to bring interest to our pages. Students will wear cloth gloves when handling materials to help preserve their state. Our ultimate goal is to create a digital archive for our school while also organizing and storing our school's historical materials in acid-free museum quality boxes.
The Yearbook Staff also endeavors include Long alumni and community members' stories and photographs to our book. This project will provide students with skills in chronicling historical materials, preserving sensitive photographs and documents, and, perhaps most importantly skills in interpersonal communication. Not only will the Yearbook Staff become more well-rounded service-driven individuals, but they will have shared their passion and knowledge of our school and community with their classmates.
