Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ask most adults, and they'll tell you everything they remember about middle school: zits, puberty, and drama. It's the ultimate coming-of-age time, tumultuous and trying - but also where you begin to find yourself. At our middle school, our students are given the ability to explore the arts in ways that would be inaccessible to them otherwise. Most are part of the government's classification for "free and reduced lunch" students, which essentially means that you live at or below the poverty line.

And regardless, our students are some of the most creative, most resilient young people you'll meet.

They are talented beyond belief, playing in the orchestra, or mariachi, or band - singing in an award-winning choir, creating paintings and sculpture and digital art; they code and build robots, design yearbooks and zines, they do math with manipulatives and dig deep into engaging texts. Our school is a magical sort of place, and it is that way for one simple reason: our kids.

My Project

These are unprecedented times in America, for education and for all of us as individuals. For all of our students, our middle school is an outlet for their creativity, silliness and a place who explore who they want to become. For many of our students' school is a refuge, an outlet, a place to escape the reality of living at or below the poverty line.

And now, with the advent of COVID-19, our students have lost more than just learning: they've lost their connections.

Our teachers, our administrators, and our staff plan to write a letter to EVERY student at our middle school and to remind them that they are why we do this work, that we miss them, and that they've got someone in their corner, thinking of them.

Our staff will sign up to write letters to our kiddos - the kiddos they share authentic connections with. And then we will mail them the supplies they need, including postage.

(And as a side note, our middle school is one of the largest in the nation - Donors Choose will only allow a listing for a maximum of 999 students, but we serve almost 1800).

Help us reach our students, who need and deserve a reminder that they are wanted, missed and loved.
