This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have taken a real interest in social justice this year while having it as an elective. They enjoy being able to talk about real life issues and relate it to their education. There are many ways to describe them. Sometimes they are silly, other times they are attentive. Sometimes they think they already have all the answers and sometimes they are vulnerable. What makes them special to me is the amount of potential they have and if given the proper resources they will be amazing scholars as they continue their education career.

My Project

I am looking to use the book Dear Martin in my social justice elective with the 8th grade students. Given my students' backgrounds and what they are exposed to outside of school it is a read that I believe will "have them on the edge of their seats." There are many things in the text the students will be able to relate to while also learning how their identity impacts them in the world similar to the main character.

It is an amazing text that will be taught in a unit that encompasses lessons on police brutality, race relations in the US, Martin Luther King Jr, and a mini lesson on affirmative action.
