I am looking to use the book Dear Martin in my social justice elective with the 8th grade students. Given my students' backgrounds and what they are exposed to outside of school it is a read that I believe will "have them on the edge of their seats." There are many things in the text the students will be able to relate to while also learning how their identity impacts them in the world similar to the main character. It is an amazing text that will be taught in a unit that encompasses lessons on police brutality, race relations in the US, Martin Luther King Jr, and a mini lesson on affirmative action.
