My students need a class set of Dear Martin by Nic Stone to enhance our reading and writing discussions.

My 6th grade homeroom is filled with students eager to learn and discuss current events. They enjoy doing hands activities and they love being introduced to new topics. While I am mainly their science teacher, I also teach writing and health.
The school I work at has children who live all over the city of Chicago.
The beautiful thing about teaching here is that students come from every background and from many different places around the world. Aside from the normal middle school mishaps, the students love each other like family, and socioeconomic status is the last thing on their minds.
Throughout the school year I enjoy teaching students about different cultures. I especially love to have them teach me about themselves and their families. One of the things I have learned by teaching students in Chicago is that they are often faced with challenges that they are unable or unsure of how to handle.
As we approach Black History Month, I believe it's important to not only talk about issues from the past, but to discuss the issues of today.
My hope is that by reading Dear Martin and other stories my students will be able to discuss their views of the society they live in and create solutions to the problems they are facing.
I realize that if I were to ask the students to purchase this book on their own, some may not be able to get the money to do so. My hope for this project is that it will instill a desire for students to learn their history so they won't repeat the mistakes of the past.
