Throughout the school year I enjoy teaching students about different cultures. I especially love to have them teach me about themselves and their families. One of the things I have learned by teaching students in Chicago is that they are often faced with challenges that they are unable or unsure of how to handle. As we approach Black History Month, I believe it's important to not only talk about issues from the past, but to discuss the issues of today. My hope is that by reading Dear Martin and other stories my students will be able to discuss their views of the society they live in and create solutions to the problems they are facing. I realize that if I were to ask the students to purchase this book on their own, some may not be able to get the money to do so. My hope for this project is that it will instill a desire for students to learn their history so they won't repeat the mistakes of the past.
