Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher of all subjects in an elementary school in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn. In my class there are 32 Fifth graders who are getting ready to go off to Middle School next year. As the year progresses, there are more and more issues that these preteens are facing on a daily basis. Some of these issues are bullying, fitting in, crushes, divorce and poverty. Every morning, we begin our day with a gathering time for approximately fifteen minutes where the students choose topics for a class discussion. As soon as the students walk in the room at 8:30 a.m., they drop their books on their desks and come right to the rug to start a discussion of their choice while I facilitate. We would like to start book clubs that deal with the issues they face, through realistic fiction stories. I am currently training the children on what a book club will look like and what his or her role will be within such a group. The materials we will need are multiple copies of the same title dealing with a theme such as "Bullying" and "Fitting In". The children will set reading goals at the beginning of the period, and save time at the end of the book club period for a book discussion dealing with the issue they chose. These discussions will be student-led, while I facilitate and meet with each group individually and guide their discussions without "taking over". This will enable the students to feel independent in their own learning and accountable for themselves. We would be extremely grateful if you would take our proposal into consideration!
