Deaf Like Me!

Help me give my students with hearing impairments a collection of books with deaf characters and role models.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Gaw's classroom raised $340

My Students

We are a K-12 residential school for students with sensory impairments. All of our students are sensory impaired and many of them have an additional disability. We have students living on and off-campus. Our residential students come from all over our state and live on our campus Sunday through Friday. Our school is considered a high poverty school.

The majority of our students read below grade level and need engaging books to motivate them to practice their literacy skills.

They enjoy school and communicating with their peers in sign language. Our hearing impaired students communicate in American Sign Language, and our visually impaired students read and write in Braille.

My Project

My hearing impaired students need books with deaf characters that represent them. Most of the books written for children have hearing characters in them. My deaf students need to be able to identify and relate to the characters in books. They need to read about deaf role models who have a deaf identity, are members of the Deaf culture, and use American Sign Language to communicate.

I would like to purchase a collection of books with deaf characters.

These books will have characters that experience the same language, communication, and social issues our deaf students encounter. My students will be able to relate to the characters in the books.
