My Students

My students are diamonds--resilient young people who carry hope and develop despite pressures and challenges. Coming from the heart of Washington, DC, my diamonds are predominantly African-American; many are from a lower socioeconomic background.

Most importantly, they are poets and dreamers and engineers and athletes and critical thinkers and revolution starters.

Although each year, I am blown away by my students' character. They are brave risk-takers and fearless learners, embracing any academic challenge and overcoming every obstacle. I'm so honored to work with these inspiring young people every day!

My Project

Engineering Design and Development is a capstone class for Engineering Academy students at our high school. Each year seniors complete a solution focused project to culminate their work in the academy; this years senior project will focus on disaster relief. An extension of the project will be a study abroad opportunity to the Caribbean in May 2019. This area of the world has been hit hard by hurricanes over the past couple years and is still in the process of rebuilding. Before heading to the Caribbean, we will connect with local universities and industry professionals in Miami to learn about affordable housing design, bio-fuel production, and application development as it relates to the disaster relief efforts that are currently in place. This opportunity will provide our students with exposure to the real world challenges they tackle in their Project Lead the Way ( PLTW) Engineering courses.

The goal of our Engineering Academy is to provide students with educational and hands-on experiences that will prepare them for various STEM-based professions.

Through our activities, students are able to discover new career paths, develop engineering knowledge and skills, and have various cultural experiences outside the Washington, DC community. In addition, through these experiences, students develop transportable skills such as collaboration, critical thinking and communication. It is our hope, that together we can continue to develop our students beyond the classroom and you will lend your support in making this trip a success. We are excited to be in the position to give our graduating seniors an opportunity of this magnitude and look forward to you helping make this a DEA tradition!
