Dance of the Earth, Moon, and Sun!

My students need a hands-on experience at a planetarium dome to learn the moon phases and eclipses and understand the “dance” of the Earth, moon and sun like never before!

My Students

I have a small class of 12 students with intellectual disabilities. They are very close friends and I have established a safe and caring classroom environment for them to escape from their struggles at home. My students do not get to participate in a lot of field trips because we cannot usually afford transportation costs for a yellow school bus, and city transportation only takes us so far. I think getting out into the community and into nature is a great way for my students to show me what they can do and how they learn. They teach me something new every day.

Giving my students hands-on learning experiences is the best way for them to learn.

My students really enjoy coming to my class in the morning and are always wanting to know what fun project or experiment we are doing next. I try to keep it interesting with lots of trips outside in the environment, and field trips when possible. Most of the supplies and materials we use for experiments are bought by me. The parents of my students struggle to pay for field trips if it is over $3.00. The donations would help our classroom tremendously.

My Project

This trip directly targets the Ohio learning standard for my students which is understanding the phases of the moon as well as the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse. Since we just had an eclipse recently, my students are very interested in this field trip. They love anything to do with NASA, space, or the environment in general.

This field trip will provide students with everything from realistic views of the night sky to impactful 360 degree images of a trip through the solar system.

This inquiry-based learning experience is perfect for the population of students I have this school year. I want to show my students the fun and exciting part of Astronomy!
