This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our school are culturally diverse. Many are recent immigrants and together they speak over 20 different languages. In addition, they all have different learning abilities and learning styles. They are energetic, curious and are enthusiastic about participating in new experiences.

Because we are a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood with a large population of special education students and English language learners, our students would benefit from having a professional ballet program with a teaching artist from the American Ballet Theatre in our new school dance studio.

Most of our students are not financially able to participate in beneficial extracurricular activities such as dance.

My Project

Our school would like to expand its wonderful dance program to include more students in other grades. We have a new school with a beautiful new dance studio that we wish to utilize with all our students including our students with disabilities and English language learners.

Our students will benefit from having the opportunity to participate in introductory classic ballet workshops with the American Ballet Theatre at Schools, which brings teaching artists to the schools and provides our students with the opportunity to participate in classical ballet classes.

ABT at School will enhance our students’ educational experiences and will give them direct access to the performing arts. Additionally, the program will prepare the students for a special opportunity to attend the annual Young Peoples Ballet Workshop (YPBW), a ballet performance featuring ABT Studio Company dancers or Main Company dancers at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens, or at the Metropolitan Opera House.

For many students, this will be their first experience viewing classical dance. Interacting with peers in a professional dance program with teaching artists from the American Ballet Theatre will be crucial to helping students with disabilities who have crisis paraprofessionals, classroom paraprofessionals and/or language paraprofessionals to understand their feelings, bodies, personal space and will also assist in improving their expressive and receptive language development.

ABT teaching artists will introduce ballet vocabulary, develop skills, improvise, and choreograph with consideration given to positive behavior support, high expectations for achievement and creating a caring student-teacher relationship in a highly structured setting.
