Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day before we begin Reading Workshop, I ask my students “Why do we read?” They respond with enthusiasm and hope that “We read every day so we can make our brains grow!” I fear, however, that I will not be able to help make their brains grow without the appropriate leveled books.

We have launched our Reading Workshop, spending each reading period engrossed in wonderful books filled with great language and captivating pictures.

Soon enough, my students will be ready to move into leveled books, books that help them learn to read conventionally with sight words, patterns, clear pictures and new vocabulary. Students learn to read these books quickly, learning new words, and noticing patterns in the way words are written, and in the way books go. The more books they can read, the faster they will move to more advanced reading levels. They should each be able to fill a book bag with 4 to 5 books each week, to master in school and to bring home to share with their families, but my library does not have enough books for each student to take home even one book in a book bag. This means that my students will be forced to read the same books over and over again, and will not truly be able to apply the reading strategies they learn.

My Project

In order to close the achievement gap between students from middle to upper class neighborhoods where schools and homes are filled with books, and my students in a low income neighborhood, my students also need books to fill their classroom library and to bring home. Your donation will fill my classroom library with a variety of leveled books so they can choose 4 to5 books at their level each week to put in their book bag to read in school and at home. More importantly, though, your donation will help their brains grow with skills and knowledge.

My students deserve an education. They need support with their learning in school with appropriate leveled books, and to be able to cuddle up with their favorite books and share them with their families at home.

Your donations would make it possible for 25 kindergarten students to hit the ground running with a strong foundation in reading great books at their level. It will set them up for a life of success. Thank you.
