Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (80%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level, with some being homeless. Some of these seven- and eight-year olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.
Our school is Title I and 90% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.
My Project
To implement the Daily Five (centers) successfully during my daily classroom schedule, my students require essential materials in order to become productive and successful scholars. This is why I am asking for a few additional items they can take along with them to their assigned centers to work independently or with other students. Some of these items include scissors and glue sticks so that they can cut and paste to match words with meanings. Another item that my students need is a writing journal to write their responses after reading story prompts. Finally, they need pencil pouches to store their supplies in order to take them along as they move from one center to the next.
