This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach visual art to middle school students at our new recently established virtual school. We serve a culturally diverse population of 1,700+ students virtually, in various forms, like live sessions through Microsoft Teams. We connect for 3 hours a day weekly. They are curious and engaged with my step by step live demos, weekly art lessons, and discussions. I serve students who have a range of artistic skills, from newbie artists to some real Georgia O'Keeffe's and Kehinde Wiley's. My version for my art students is for them to grow and develop each semester.
My Project
This projects is to help our student in an equitable way, to create art at home. Kits will be made for each student so that they can learn art skills and develop their artistic self. Art is therapeutic and our school is a Social Emotional Learning cohort, so having access to art supplies will help my students and parents to have one less thing to worry about. I know what it is like to feel that sense of hopelessness, stress and frustrations about not being able to complete an assignment because of a lack funding for supplies. This will be elevated with the fund of these resources. Students will receive a sketchbook, 4 sheets of watercolor paper, watercolor set, 2 sharpie pens and a pack of color pencils to help them on their virtual art journey.
