Cycling of Matter Through Ecosystems

Help me give my students hands-on experiences, as they learn how matter cycles through ecosystems, by funding the purchase of hydroponic and other growing supplies for our classroom!

My Students

My students are curious and eager to learn about the natural world around them! We live in the beautiful state of Utah, so the wonder of Earth’s features surround us. They are explorers, scientist, and engineers learning how to observe phenomena and ask questions. My 5th grade science classes focus on helping students learn how to learn. We foster a learning community where it is okay to make mistakes, re-evaluate thoughts, and share misconceptions. We applaud anyone willing to share their thought process whether it is “right” or not, so that all students are willing to try.

Our classrooms must cultivate global citizens who are willing to take risks to try and solve problems.

21st century students must learn how to identify problems, analyze data, and develop creative solutions to issues facing society at large like: climate change, clean water, and scarcity of natural resources. The best way for students to learn these skills is through hands-on practice. Students develop questions and design experiments to help answer those questions. You can help them develop their problem solving skills, while tacking real world challenges, by funding the purchase of experiment supplies!

My Project

Students need and want to collaborate with their peers in meaningful ways. Hands-on lessons that allow for creativity and experimentation create students capable of learning beyond the obvious answers right in front of them. These resources will allow students to develop questions and design experiments to help answer those questions.

Learning about the movement of matter in ecosystems, along with designing conservation solutions, is a unit of study my students love.

Growing plants is a key component of “doing” as students develop a deeper understanding of matter. You can help them develop their problem solving skills, while tacking real world challenges, by funding the purchase growing supplies for our classroom!
