TCES is a rural Title I school with a school report grade of C. Our students live in a high poverty/economically disadvantaged area. We have a diverse group of students with about 60% African American and 40% Caucasion.
We are currently trying to implement research based strategies to motivate and inspire our students to collaborate and perform to the best of their ability and increase our overall student growth in reading and math.
Although our school is a low-performing school, we met expected growth last year and aspire to exceed growth this school year. We also have a large population of exceptional students who receive EC services due to learning and behavioral disabilities. Our students are the best in the world and we want to provide opportunities and resources to help them be successful students. Due to Hurricane Florence many of our students were displaced or lost their homes and belongings. As our community is trying to rebuild, we continue to try to provide everything our students need to learn.
My Project
A collaboration rug would be an asset to our classroom. In second grade, whole group instruction occurs on the rug in the front of the room. Then students break apart in small collaborative groups and apply the material. Collaborative grouping is a research based strategy that helps students work together to process material learned.
Our rural community was hit really hard by Hurricane Florence.
Our classroom is a safe haven for our children who are all recipients of free lunch. Although our children struggle financially, they have an unending desire to learn. A collaborative rug will help develop a warm and inviting learning environment that is conducive to learning.
