My students are so special because they come from so many different cultures and backgrounds! I have Mexican-Americans, Vietnamese-Americans, African-Americans, Filipino-Americans, South American-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Afghani-Americans, you name it! Most are first generation Californians and most are second language learners. We at our school are located in the heart of East San Jose.
Every year we learn to accept each other's differences and discover our strengths, so they can work as a team to learn and grow, academically, but also morally, socially, and emotionally.
What they accomplish in ten months as a team is nothing short of a miracle! The love of learning is contagious and hopefully they all catch it!
Most are first generation Californians and most are second language learners. Scholastic News is an excellent tool to motivate even the most reluctant reader! With current events and exotic places and issues discussed, explored, and described for these young minds.
We are requesting a subscription to Scholastic News magazine which comes with Common Core Standards homework pages that really have the students analyzing and summarizing what they learn.
The online videos and audio book is free to every student and some of the important article, I show the video the accompanies it to build even more interest. The articles cover Social Studies, Reading, Math, Science, Politics, the Environment, Debates, and Wildlife Conservation. I do not have to beg to have them read this on their own, because they do. The pictures are vivid and topics numerous.
For the last three years, this is one of my most powerful tools to get my reluctant or slow readers to build their vocabulary and knowledge, so they have the skills to succeed in the complex demands of 5th grade California Common Core Standards.
