Current Events- To Inform and Engage Students: Scholastic Magazines

Help me give my students greater access to literary sources for learning about current events.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Wilburn's classroom raised $315

My Students

On September 5th, I will be welcoming 24 bright, eager, and talented 3rd graders. This will be my fourth year as a lead teacher, and I look forward to supporting this new group of great thinkers and learners by engaging them with authentic learning experiences that challenge and interest them. This includes exposing them to diverse forms of literature with opportunities to reflect and delve deeper into topics that have real world application.

Curiosity is one of our school wide virtues, and these magazines are instrumental in piquing students' interest and questioning skills about the world around them.

My Project

Use of Scholastic Magazines is a productive way of supplementing the rigorous content that I already engage students with through our core curriculum. In the past I have used Scholastic Magazines to promote whole group discussion and reflection on topics that range from the impact of climate change, immigration, and school safety. Now more than ever, it is imperative that students are provided with regular opportunities to inquire, debate, and connect with the world around them.

Centered around current events, the magazines provide perspectives and age appropriate content that not only interests students, but builds their non-fiction reading skills and content area knowledge.

Fortunately, the annual subscriptions also provide multiple means of representation; every two weeks, physical copies will be available for students and students will be able to access the magazines through Scholastic's online platform. These digital issues include options for the text to be read aloud, and other benefits that have the potential to support a wide range of learners.
