I am a third and fourth grade teacher at a small elementary school in the East Village. I teach all academic subjects to an extremely diverse group of students, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs. I interweave literacy activities throughout the curriculum.
I am requesting funding for an individual subscription to Weekly Reader Magazine for each of my students. Weekly Reader is a non-fiction magazine which includes articles on current events, as well as feature stories, written at the students' grade level. It also comes with a supplement, ScienceSpin, which focuses on science-related topics and activities. I anticipate that Weekly Reader will benefit my students in many ways. It will hone their ability to read and absorb non-fiction, it will keep them up-to-date on current events (especially important during an election year), and it will provide meaty topics for discussion and written responses.
In the past, I have often used magazines with my students in this manner. I have always found the combination of high-interest articles and vivid photographs and illustrations to be very attractive to students. Even those students who find reading and writing challenging, or who are English language learners, have been strongly motivated by the use of magazines. Having their own individual copies makes it easy for students to use Weekly Reader for homework and to write in it as necessary. In addition, because all students will be reading the same articles, we will be able to have whole-class and small-group discussions that will help students develop an appreciation of different points of view on the same topic.
This grant proposal requests an individual subscription of Weekly Reader Edition 3, as well as the ScienceSpin supplement, for each member of the class entering in September 2004. I believe these magazines offer a uniquely beneficial literary resource for use both at home and at school.
