Current Events Literature for Fantastic 3rd Graders

My students need 24 subscriptions to the current events magazine Time for Kids.

I teach 3rd grade in a high-need community, with families of a low socio-economic status. We are a Title 1 school, which means that over 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch at school. Supplying my classroom with supplies is entirely my responsibility, and it can be tough!

I find that most 3rd graders have mastered "learning to read", and they are now eager to "read to learn". They enjoy reading the fantasy stories they've heard since Kindergarten, but what they are really hungry for is nonfiction literature with current themes. They are full of questions! Knowing that the bulk of what they will read as adults will be nonfiction, I feel that I need to get them started reading nonfiction as early as I can. We need more nonfiction texts in the classroom!

Having Time for Kids in the classroom will allow me to expose my 3rd graders to current nonfiction texts which they will read and discuss with the class and with buddies. They will also be able to use the reading strategies they've acquired in a meaningful and a practical way. Having individual subscriptions will enable the students to take the texts home and share them with their families and friends. Many families at my school do not have books at home, and so this subscription will add to their home libraries.

Your gift of Time for Kids in my classroom will ensure that my students are getting the experiences they need with nonfiction texts all year long. They will also expand their breadth of knowledge by being constantly up to date with national current events. Your gift will also make it possible for my students to read each night. Research shows that the students who read more are the ones who get better at reading. All they need is something interesting to read!!! Thank you thank you!
