Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a fifth-grade teacher at a new small public school in Oakland, in which over 90 percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. In just one year, my students will be leaving the protections of our elementary school and heading off into the big, sometimes scary world ahead of them. I need your help to make sure that they're fully prepared to grow, learn, meet challenges, and shape the world they'll inherit. I want to do this through increased education in current events. We already get free newspapers in our classroom, but often the content is a little too adult, or the language is inaccessible--particularly for my students who are still learning English. What I'd like is to supplement the newspapers with a subscription to a news magazine designed just for kids. "Time" magazine produces a weekly, full-color magazine called "Time for Kids." For a small amount, each of my students could receive their own copy of a brand-new magazine each week of the school year. They'll stay informed about the major events in the world around them, and they'll be doing it in a way that's both accessible and exciting. With your help, my students can develop their non-fiction reading skills, build their capacity for critical thinking, and engage in the issues that affect them and their world. Please help me prepare my students to be the most informed and responsible future leaders they can be.
