This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach social studies to a very diverse group of sixth graders. Many of them have never had social studies taught to them before explicitly.
Our school has students who speak many different languages, practice many different religions, and enjoy extremely varied interests.
We do not track our students based on tested ability; rather, we feel that it is important for our kids to learn from each other.
My Project
I teach a very interesting class based around the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Africa, China, India, Greece, and Rome. My students are introduced to historical themes that they will find repeat throughout the story of the human race. I want them to have the opportunity to interact with their own world in the same way at a level that is appropriate for their reading levels and sense of engagement.
With a class subscription to the news magazine "Current Events", my students will be able to connect the historical themes that we touch on in ancient cultures to their own world. I want them to analyze how conquest, colonialism, economic variations, societal roles, architecture, language development, and other pertinent concepts relate not only to ancient civilizations but to what happens in their own lives.
Current news is confusing enough for a group of sixth graders that are just beginning to be interested in what is going on around them politically.
I want to give them a lifelong interest and perspective on historical events that will help them become more involved and active citizens.
