My Students

I have students that enjoy reading, but I am discouraged by the lack of books we have that challenge them as readers. The books in our library rarely go over the 8th grade level. The texts I am requesting would allow me to encourage their reading skills but not bore them to death!

We live in a very rural area in Wisconsin.

Most students do not have access to a public library because the nearest one is 20 miles away and their parents are not readers. As the only English teacher at the high school, I feel responsible for making sure they have a variety of high interest books that are the quality the common core demands.

My Project

I am requesting 1 set of Exemplar Rests: Stories (Grades 11-12). With these books, I can challenge my eager students that want to read more complex texts, without worrying that they are not appropriate for a high school student. Please help my students. They want to learn and grow, we just lack the resources. I have been buying books at used book stores with my own money; but the tattered edges and torn covers make my students feel like they aren't good enough to read new books.

Overall, this could make or break some students' college career.

I can not let them enter a university system thinking "The Hunger Games" is a challenging text. I want more for my students. After all, they are our future.
