Our school is in a high poverty neighborhood and 100% of students receive free or reduced-price meals. My second grade class is made up almost entirely of students of color, including English Language Learners who speak languages including Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Cape Verdean Creole at home. They are incredibly eager learners who make progress each and every day.
Despite the challenges they face, my students are excited to learn and grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, artists, and scientists.
They are eager to explore the world around them and dive into our second-grade material with gusto. Watching them explore, reason, and dance their way through learning is a huge privilege!
Imagine the classroom you would want your second grader to walk into. What does it look like? How does it feel? When I picture what I want for my own children, I envision a space with flexible work areas, kids sprawled out on the rug with pillows, and an overall feeling of joy and welcome. I imagine a space where all types of learners have their needs met and can find a comfortable place to read and collaborate. With your help, I can create this environment for my students!
To foster the flexible, welcoming environment we all want for our children, we need multiple seating options so all students can find themselves a comfy place to learn.
Last year, my students would rush to get the bean bags and pillows. This year, I want to make sure we have enough alternative seating for everyone! That's why I'm asking for new bean bags, a set of comfy pillows, and some floor seats. Having a bench with storage will open up more reading area in the library without taking away book storage space. While it can be difficult to fit this variety of work areas, having a tabletop drying rack for students' art will free up some space and allow for increased flexibility.
