This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I was lucky to have had a teacher that found a way to help me love reading at a young age! My goal as a teacher is to do the same. I work with an amazing group of children. Many do not have access to literature at home, and desperately deserve to experience all the ways we can encounter written words!

This year, my classroom is full of 19 smiling faces.

The rule is that everyone must laugh and smile at least once - not too hard when you are surrounded by this group of 3rd graders. They come from all walks of life. Most of my students are from single parent households - parents who work long hours to provide for them. Unfortunately, the majority of these parents do not have the ability to expose their children to the new technologies in today's world.

My Project

Reading is the overall area weakness in our 3rd grade room. It just doesn't always seem interesting and fun - and some days even worthwhile to my students. However, it is the most important thing we can work on! I want to expose this adorable group to the many ways literature can be obtained in today's world. With the use of Nooks in our classroom, they can experience novels, magazines, and newspapers. Each child can place their very own "bookmarks" in the text and then pass it off to another child who can then do the same - without the other child losing their spot! Literature Circles will come alive! Students can highlight parts of the text they find important, enjoyable, or if they have made a connection to it! We can read with our Book Buddies from our Nooks and share the experience across grade levels! And best of all, the students will have a chance to experience a piece of technology they may never have obtained before!

Can you imagine how fun reading would have been as an 8 or 9 year old with the use of a handheld computer device?

I just know they will be inclined to read if it were their turn with the Nook!
