My Students

My third graders come to school every day because they know it is a safe place where someone will protect and care about them. Ninety percent of the students attending my school qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. They come from broken families or parents who work multiple jobs just to pay rent. It is hard for them to continue their learning at home because parents are working hard to make ends meet, or they simply don't have any materials to work with. Due to this fact, many of them are below grade level and struggling to get caught up.

My Project

A lot of my students are low level readers or English Language Learners, and have trouble finding books and staying engaged. We've been working on ways to find "books you love," but my students still struggle to read for more than a few minutes at a time.

I want my students to have a true love for reading!

I've heard of programs where dogs come to schools, students read to the dogs, and are extremely engaged! Since my school does not have that program, I'm hoping "reading buddies" are the next best thing! I'd like my students to be able to choose a stuffed animal buddy and read to them during their independent reading time. This will then, hopefully, promote a positive environment where students are truly engaged in their reading! I want my students to have that feeling where they don't want to put down their book, and I'm hoping reading buddies will move them in that direction!
