Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inner city, low-income children who are in the 2nd grade of the Providence Public Schools. Many speak Spanish at home.
I teach at a Title I school in Rhode Island where everyone receives free breakfast and 90 percent of the students receive free/reduced price lunch.
They are unable to get to a local library on a regular basis. My classroom library provides them the only opportunity that they have to get books. My students are taking two books home every weeknight, and three on the weekends.
My Project
My students need to improve their reading ability, their comprehension and their fluency. I am requesting Practice Cards, Reading Logs and other reading and writing materials which will help my students improve their skills as well as enhance their vocabularies. Further, these materials are necessary for my students to have access to a print rich environment that will enhance their love of reading.
These materials will form a core part of our classroom's independent reading centers.
Through these centers, my students will maintain a high level of engagement while working independently or in small groups. This will help my students build a strong foundation in reading that will serve them throughout their entire lives.
