Curious About Chemistry, Engaged in Earth Science

Help me give my students chemistry and earth science materials to supplement the curriculum.

My Students

The students in my school are a beautifully diverse group of children who love to read and write. Each day, I am more and more impressed with their ability to connect with the world through books and other media.

These children crave learning experiences that allow them to better understand the world around them.

They are always in search of challenges that reflect who they are and who others are, as well as materials that will support a literacy-rich environment.

My Project

This project was thought up, researched, and drafted by the sixth graders at my school who are hoping to make a positive impact on ALL students. They named lack of STEAM, hands-on, and integrated activities as one of the BIG improvements that they wanted to see in our school. Here’s what they wrote:

We chose these hands-on materials and activities to match the units in the science curriculum at our school.

We noticed that students in many grades are learning about natural or earth science. Another big topic that is being taught is chemistry.

These materials will get students more interested in doing activities, and they’ll actually try because they know there will be a fun outcome to what they have made. For example, when we did the periodic table, we didn’t get to actually see our experiment with the elements. We only used the websites which told us what it was like. These materials will help the visual and tactile learners that want to see and experiment with the concepts they are learning about in science class.

These hands-on activities would make a difference in students’ learning by keeping the class engaged. Some activities will be used for distance learning--the materials will be sent from school to the student(s)’ home. This way the quarantined learner(s) can participate and be a part of the in-person classroom, too. We believe these materials can help students be more engaged in school, as well in the lessons.
