My Students

Our library is the hub of activity for our diverse population with students coming in daily with their families, classes or individually to read books. The school is an urban school with 450, K-5 students.

Our students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students qualifying for free lunch.

It is one of the most racially diverse zip codes in the country, and my students speak a variety of languages at home including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. We have the highest ELL enrollment in any Seattle public school.

In addition to being economically and racially diverse, our students are academically diverse. Two-thirds of our school population participates in an immersion program and are taught core curriculum in either Spanish or Mandarin for half of their day.

My Project

These new books will allow my students to have access to reading at home! The majority of these books are paperbacks which is a more affordable option for books that need to be transported to school and back via curbside checkout!

In addition to our curbside checkout where families can request books from our school library catalog, many of these books will be delivered to families that have transportation limitations via bicycle!

During this Covid -19 era, wonderful bike messenger volunteers will be delivering 4-5 books per student every other week to allow them access to reading actual books.
