Help me give my students the smell of fresh coffee poured from an airpot, chalk markers for the menu, labels for the logo they designed, and string lights to create a cozy cafe space in our school community.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
At 8:10 am, you head towards the doors of our high school, carrying your backpack and all of the emotions of a high schooler. The smell of freshly brewed, local coffee greets you as you enter the school. Music and laughter float through your ears as you spot a cafe window, illuminated with string lights. As you move towards the window, a menu drawn with chalk markers catches your eye. You decide to order the school special, "The Jaguar", because the student in front of you recommended it. A delicious coffee is placed in your hands by a student barista who welcomes you to MJHS.
Welcome to MJJ Cafe-a place to foster authentic connection, build community within the school, and support students with disabilities in our school's Career Technical Student Organizations.
The goals of the cafe are to set up a school-based enterprise providing hands on experience for students in our Career Technical Instruction and opportunity for students in other CTSOs (SkillsUSA) to employ the knowledge from their CTAE courses to benefit the school community. The students in my Graphic Design Pathway have designed a logo which will be printed on the round sticker labels. Students in CTI and SkillsUSA volunteer to work at the cafe in the morning and after school. The cafe has provided opportunity for students in both organizations to form personal connections that support our school culture of warmth and inclusivity.
To meet this goal, my students require a coffee airpot and string lights to create a cozy atmosphere, chalk markers to write the weekly special board. Cleaner and locks will keep our cafe safe and organized.
