My Students

I am a 6th grade Social Studies teacher in a wonderful, Title One school.

Around 80% of our students are on free and reduced lunch and the community we serve is high-need. Despite all the negative influences around, my 6th grade students strive to do their very best everyday - which makes me very proud.

My Project

Since my students strive to do their very best, I want to give them the best in return. This year our school has started a program called Mastery. This is an opportunity for teachers to work with small groups of students on core subjects (math, reading, writing). I am the teacher in charge of the reading group. My goal is to increase fluency, comprehension, and insight through a meaningful and comprehensive literacy program. I plan on meeting this goal through small group book studies, using books that focus on different cultures. The two books that I choose to start off my book study are Esperanza Rising and Homeless Bird. Two wonderful books about Mexican and Indian culture. I want to create an environment where we can read books in a comfortable setting. This comfortable setting will allow the opportunity for student discussions, the development of positive social skills, and hopefully it will become the birthplace my student's love of reading.

Through these book studies my student's will be exposed to different cultures outside of their own.

Many will be able to relate to the characters in the books, and many will be exposed for the first time. As a Social Studies teacher first and then a reading teacher, I want my students to be exposed to various cultures. Not only do I want them to be exposed, but I want to learn from them. I know that through reading these two wonderful books, my students will accomplish both goals.
