My Students

Hello, Hola, and Bonjour! Welcome to the school where several different cultures, languages, and customs are present. Each and every year, I learn something new about my students and their way of life. This year, I am taking on a new position as a media specialist with a focus on multicultural education and will be the teacher of all 624 students!

Have you ever felt like you wanted to see more children's books that had characters that looked or dressed like you did?

I know that many of the students I teach would love to see their culture or customs represented in a book. With the funding from this project, I would be able to purchase several different books to focus on hispanic heritage, native american heritage, holidays around the world, lunar new year, black history, women's history, disability awareness, arab american heritage, asian american heritage and pacific islander heritage, ramadan, and carribean heritage.

My Project

These materials will be used to generate an entire curriculum for grades K-5. Each grade level will have their own stories, as to not repeat the same exact story year after year. I will be able to teach each student in our elementary school about the special cultures we have in our school to cultivate culturally responsive students.

By using these texts, I hope to open up a world of possibilities and show students to places and people they may have never heard of.

I want them to explore and question the world around them and take that information and use it for good!
