Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inquisitive, creative, and enjoy learning in an active way. In fact, whenever given the opportunity to experiment, explore, or research new concepts, they are very receptive and happy to learn something first hand, rather than listen to it.

My students prefer learning whenever they can see a direct link between what they are exploring in class and its applications to real-life problems or situations.

My teaching is very student-centered, and students do all of the work and most of the explaining; this allows them to take charge of their learning, and involves them deeply in the lessons. Whether we perform a lab or they are asked to complete a project, my students love to be given choices and to feel like their interests and opinions matter. As a result, I would like to use this platform to help my students obtain resources that they would otherwise not receive.

My Project

Over the last few years you have helped me create a very broad science classroom library. Students can check out books dealing with philosophy of science, autobiographies, evolutionary biology, genetics, bioengineering, zoology and ecology. However, only a few of the books I have to offer deal with the struggles that scientists face on a daily basis when conducting research, nor their personal challenges as human beings. Students often think scientists and engineers are these special, super-smart individuals who have nothing in common with them. However, scientists come from different backgrounds and life experiences, but their growth mindset is what sets them apart from other people.

Regardless of whether my students are economically disadvantaged, part of the LGBTQ community, part of any minority, or just curious about other people's struggles, I want to provide them with resources to broaden their understanding of who scientists are and show them that anybody can be a scientist, if that is what they want to be.

Additionally, I want to focus this year's project also on culturally relevant unethical scientific endeavors that have targeted minorities in the past, because knowing and understanding the past is essential to building a better future for all.
