Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any six-year-old should have to handle, but still, 24 bubbly faces bounce into my classroom each morning, ready and eager to learn. I am so grateful to know each of them and their families.

I teach at a school where 95% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 67% are English Learners.

Only 35% of adults living within my school's zip code have graduated from high school. The students I work with every day battle tremendous challenges, but they are incredibly bright and resilient and they will make tremendous progress this year despite the challenges they face.

My Project

Every day, my students gather on the rug for a read aloud. This is one of the most special times of day in my classroom. It is so valuable for many reasons. Not only do the read alouds reinforce reading strategies that students are working on, but they also teach important life lessons. These read aloud books will help to build their lifelong love of reading! The white boards will be another major part of my classroom. Students use the white boards each morning as we learn a new phonics pattern and students practice reading and writing words with the new pattern. We also use them during math, where students work with partners to solve problems in different ways on their white boards.

My school has a growing number of refugee students and newcomers from all over the world.

Many of the books I have selected feature characters with similar experiences to those my students have had. These books will help students to process their experiences and to recognize that they are not alone. In first grade, most direct instruction is done with students sitting on our classroom rug. The white boards allow students to practice what I'm teaching in real time so that I can monitor progress.
