Culturally Connected Books

Help me give my students the opportunity to read and explore the Hawaiian culture.

This project is fully funded

My Project

At Ka Waihona, our students are composed of a majority of Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders who live on Hawaiian Homestead. These students come from the Leeward Coast of Oahu, from Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae, and Makaha. Our students are resilient, socially responsible, and resourceful.

When students have access to culturally relevant literature, they are able to make personal connections between the book and their own lives.

For this project, we are requesting a variety of Hawaiian culture books such as I Am a Creature of the Tides: What Am I?, How Hau Became Hau'ula, Honokawailani Pond, Kelekolio The Little Manini, and more. These books are perfect for my growing readers and it also teaches them 'Olelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian words and phrases). By having these books in our library, helps my students to create a community where we acknowledge our experiences and respect our differences regardless of culture and ethnicity.
