My Project

Over 80% of my students are immigrants themselves or have parents who are immigrants. For most, English is their second language. Our school is made up of a diverse population of immigrant students, including those from Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Poland, Albania, and China, to name a few.

During the fall and winter holidays, it's important that all students and cultures are represented.

A few holidays dominate during this time and may cause students who do not celebrate to feel left out. Making an effort to learn about other traditions can reveal many core similarities and help students feel connected. Creating cultural projects is a fun way to represent all cultures.

My students would be thrilled to print their unique digital artwork celebrating their culture throughout the school year. Our school doesn't currently have a print center, so teachers and staff print for students whenever possible. Unfortunately, this is limited to black and white printing, which isn't great when working on creative projects. In addition, most teachers buy their own ink as our school funds are limited for ink supplies.

In addition, I would love to give students simple rewards and incentives to help boost motivation to celebrate everyone's participation. Recognizing students by offering positive reinforcement with small rewards such as small desk pets and other incentives will help me encourage students to have pride in their identity and create a respectful environment.

Providing color printing allows my students to accurately depict the vibrant colors of their cultures, flags, and traditions during these classroom activities. Together with our incentives, these materials will help ensure every child feels included, represented, and celebrated.
