Cultural & Language Awareness in a Flexible Seating Learning Environment

My students need a mat, cushions/pillows, and table to provide flexible seating to meet the needs of all types of learners. In order to preserve their work, a laminator and pouches would be useful.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a World Language educator and cultural worker at the high school level and I consider myself passionate about teaching languages. The students I teach are typically between 13-18 years old. Our district is fortunate enough to have some amazing students and we are a very close-knit community. Our students work hard to master proficiency in a second language as early as middle school. They are given the opportunity to explore multiple languages at the middle school level and by high school, they choose the path they want to continue. At the beginning of each school year, I have each class create goals and a vision for our Spanish classes. We brainstorm together and all of their ideas are used to create this vision. Collectively they stated that in a world language classroom, they wanted a safe environment that fostered creativity and exploration of culture & language while honoring diversity and cultural awareness.

Although our students come from diverse backgrounds and are often faced with adversity at a young age; in the classroom, we try to put that aside, focus on goals and positivity, while acquiring another language and learning about how others live around the world.

My Project

My students need a mat, cushions/pillows & table to provide flexible seating to meet the needs of all types of learners. In order to preserve their work, a laminator & pouches would be useful. A learning environment sets the tone in any classroom. With the materials requested, students will be able to learn in a class setting that provides all types of learners a variety of opportunities to excel in the curriculum at hand.

Traditional seating isn't for everyone and these flexible seating options will provide different types of high, medium and low seating arrangements to help keep students engaged while giving them the freedom to move around as needed.

Providing students with feedback and models will help them understand what is expected of them. Laminating their work and posting it will preserve it longer and it can also be kept for their graduation portfolios.
