My Project

Help my students experience and appreciate the Mexican folk art of Repujado, the cultural significance of Henna, Japanese Sashiko mending, and other cultural heritage arts! Curiosity and cross-cultural understanding can encourage students to get to know more about the world and their peers and foster a more inclusive environment. Students will explore different cultures in the world through creating folk and cultural heritage arts from other countries in the world that represent the backgrounds of our student body, and then reflecting on the experience and how it may have impacted their feelings and behaviors in the art room. This will be an opportunity for students to connect with their own heritage, in some cases, and in others, learn about an entirely new culture and the arts they practice and appreciate.

Students will not only learn new skills through this project, but also build a more inclusive and understanding community in the classroom!

With the henna paste, they will practice and create their own intricate traditional henna designs and learn about the art that goes back as far as ancient Egypt. With the Sashiko threads, fabrics, and needles, we will learn about this traditional art of mending and why it is also an artistic practice. These activities also have wonderful tie-ins as sustainable practices, which is something we try to practice often in the art room. The tin and sharpies will be used to create Repujado, a Mexican embossed metal art that can be used to help us to add more visual impact to our Offrenda and Latinx Heritage celebrations. This project will have a lasting impact on our students and their appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our student body and greater society.
