Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, dedicated, inspirational and their work in my new theater classes allows them to literally re-write the script for the arts in our district, and, moreover, help to change the trajectory of their academic careers and beyond.
Research shows that the arts prepare students for success in school, work and life by boosting math and literacy achievement, developing creativity and critical thinking skills, strengthening perseverance, facilitating cross-cultural understanding and much, much more.
My theater classes are filled with students that are eager to try new experiences while developing their professional-level communication and social skills. My students are positive risk-takers who are learning real-world skills through drama and performing arts. It is extremely important to me that my students are exposed to as many eye-opening experiences as possible while they are in High School to inspire them to take chances and challenge themselves to reach for the stars.
My Project
This event ties into youth and urban culture through music, rapping and beatboxing. For students to start to appreciate theater and live performance, they need to be exposed to accessible material. Material in which they can relate. This interactive performance will engage all students regardless if they are performing arts students. For students that already are experiencing the benefits of the arts, this event will enhance their appreciation for live theater. Additionally, students will be able to learn improvisation, and beatboxing and freestyling techniques from master performers in a smaller post-show workshop.
SHOCKWAVE is featured on the HAMILTON Mixtape, was part of Lin Manuel Miranda's creative teams for both IN THE HEIGHTS and HAMILTON, and was also a featured actor on the PBS series THE ELECTRIC COMPANY for three seasons.
SHOCKWAVE is currently in FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME with Lin Manuel Miranda. As stated on their website: "FLS is a stage show like no other. Five performers take the crowd on a non-stop, hip-hop improve ride, spinning cues from the audience into instantaneous riffs and fully realized musical numbers. The New York Times calls them, “Masters in the art of Freestyle rhyme.”' To have the opportunity to expose my students to high caliber performers and teaching artist is phenomenal. Thank you in advance for helping to make this event a reality for my students!
