Learning a foreign language at the secondary level is a Tennessee state requirement. Most of our students are eager to learn a foreign language and want to be able to communicate with students from other countries. Students become even more excited about learning a foreign language when introduced to the rich and varied cultures of the countries who speak the language they are learning. Virtual field trips, videos and actually meeting students from these countries enhances their desire to be able to communicate in a language other than their own.
Some of our students have participated in mission trips to Spanish-speaking countries such as Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.
They return with invaluable cultural experiences, and their stories impress and entice other students to learn more about the language and the cultures.
As a teacher, I am constantly seeking the best ways to introduce my students to the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. At the same time, I want to utilize technology and activities so that the students are learning the language while enjoying the culture, as well.
My Project
Each bimonthly magazine contains current and relevant culture lessons that enable students to study grammar in a fun way! The beginning students read the magazine in beginner Spanish and gain confidence in their abilities to read and understand. Meanwhile, they are learning about holidays, events, traditions, sports, famous people, even the impact of Sponge Bob on Spanish-speaking countries!
The activities included with the readings are easy to assess for understanding, and will allow me and the students to determine where further work is needed.
Using these magazines will provide a needed and fun break from textbook routine, and will certainly allow for rigor and relevance while learning the beautiful foreign language and its cultures.
